This is permanently on the ice to take a few measurements and relay data back to the reference station or via text messages (SMS) to Southampton.
It needs a vertical pole to hold the GPS, GSM and long range antennas, as well as the snow measuring device. On its right you can see the 4m long pole acting as an anchor. This may melt out completely if we are unlucky with the weather.
