A modified hot-water jet-wash is used with a steel rod and nozzle to drill to the bottom of the glacier in around 20-30 minutes.  More details about the drilling can be found in the 2003 field trip pages, as this was the first time it was used.

It burns diesel and needs a good supply of water from streams fed into a tank.
